Someone once
Told me
The greatest of all
Expression would be
A scream, a scream a gut wrenching scream
An emotional bellowing pea-soup scream

Well I tried that today
In my own little way
Wanted to say
That id found my own way

Well I squeaked

I found my voice trapped
Inside what felt like a heart
Dressed in a pinstripe suite with a yellow tie
Tied too tight around my spine

I smelled the fear
Like on a cold night in NY City
When the alcoholic breath demands your wallet
Just from behind the hair on the back of your neck

I felt my voice abandon my soul
Ripping itself from my imaginary flesh
Clearly it new more of my talent
Then my disastrous ego

But my ego, my wonderful and lovely ego.
Hell tell me its fine
Feed me the lie that makes shame pass
Tell me how beautiful I am
Tell me how smart, how cleaver, how funny
No really brilliantly funny.

So funny those common folk just dont get it.
Hell show me how to lock the door to my scream
You know just in case.
Wouldnt want anymore shame
Its ok just a scream whats a scream anyway
Nobody cares anyway its just another scream

Freak show

Freak Show

Got a paint brush
and a damn good vein.
It that your name?
im less than delighted
real excited
gonna paint you too.

think ill get lit tonight
give all these cowboys
the (badword) freak show tonight
yeah. Get real drunk
on their ignorance and spite
paint their tired little town up right
yeah .
thats right
blinding bright
burn that badword
in the dim moonlight

so you came
to see
the freak show-faggot
city boy scream
got your mind made up
how long itll take
you wanna.. me
silence this banshee
then have punch and cake
the good ole boys bet
how many hits itll take
before I disappear
painted red
drowning in fear
in a pickup bed

got the boots
and shiny
dime store spurs
ask your brother
lets see how they burn
gonna paint those too
make em .
burn real bright
make them something new
in this dim moonlight

Stop prison propagation in Tennessee!

Please pass this message on to your friends and family.

Dear Friends,

We are working to stop a prison from being built in Cocke County, at the entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Our local newspaper is conducting a one-vote-per-computer poll at http://www.cocke.xtn.net

Will you take a few seconds to support us by clicking on the link above and scrolling down to the box on the lower right hand side and voting NO?

We desire state and federal investment in education, economic equity and environmental protection, not in seeing the USA continue as the greatest incarcerator of its people in the history of the world.

Thank you and please share with others if you can.

hey, poke that thingy right there…..

Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression) are serious psychotic illnesses that affect about 2% of the population. Many investigations have explored the causes of these two disorders with conflicting and inconclusive results. According to a study published in The Lancet, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder may have a similar genetic cause.

Led by Dr Dmitri Tkachev, a neurobiologist at the Babraham Institute in Cambridge, UK, the study examined abnormalities in the myelin sheath of deceased patients who had either schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. The myelin sheath is a fatty protein that coats and insulates the long, strand-like extension of nerve cells called the axon. Dr Tkachev and his colleagues examined the myelin protein production of preserved brain tissue of three groups of people: those who had schizophrenia, those with bipolar disorder, and individuals who had neither of those two diseases.

Defects in the myelin sheath
The researchers found that people who had schizophrenia and those with bipolar disorder had defects in the myelin sheath. Furthermore, the researchers found abnormalities in the development of a type of nonneuronal cell called an oligodendrocyte in patients with both disorders. Oligodendrocytes form part of the myelin sheath of nerve cells.

The investigators suggest that this common finding in both disorders lends support to the idea that schizophrenia and bipolar disorder share a common genetic cause, even though the two disorders are clinically distinct and patients display a different array of symptoms. Because the different neurotransmitter systems involved in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder require different treatment regimens, researchers have generally believed that these disorders arise from a different set of defects in brain function.

Nerve cells
Previous investigations into the nature and causes of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder have focused on the nerve cells themselves, the synaptic gap between the cells, or on the neurotransmitters that are responsible for transmitting messages from one nerve cell to the other. The myelin sheath of nerve cells is responsible for modulating the speed of signal transmission from one cell to another. Defects in the sheath may cause some of the symptoms observed in patients with schizophrenia, such as hallucinations, and the manic and depressive states characteristic of bipolar disorder.

The current study suggests that dysfunction in gene expression of the proteins responsible for the myelin sheath may be responsible for both of these psychotic illnesses.

Living Faith: Inside the world of Southeast Asia

Excerpt - When I started this project, my aim was to put a human face on Islam in Southeast Asia, a goal that seems more urgent now that Southeast Asia has become a new front in the global war on terrorism.

Afro-Mexicans of the Costa Chica

Excerpt - The purpose of this website is to introduce readers to the culture and unique experience of Mexicans of African descent.  If you are like most people, you probably have never heard of Afro-Mexicans and are completely unaware that they exist. If you fall into this category, this page will hopefully be quite a learning experience for you.

What Becomes a Legend Most? by Thulani Davis

Excerpt - from an old article.

People outside of her family may never know why Malikah Brown, one of the six daughters of Malcolm X, loaded up a sizable collection of his manuscripts, diaries, photographs, and negatives, and secretly hauled them off to a storage locker in Florida and then never reclaimed them. But when a still elusive man named James Calhoun bought the storage contents and then offered them to an auction house for sale, a door was opened into what remains of the papers of Malcolm X, later known as Malcolm Shabazz. It took legal action to stop that sale, and scholars and community activists alike hope that the outcome of this strange saga will be that steps are taken to preserve the intellectual legacy of this influential maverick.
