Bon voyage: Wu-Tang’s ODB dead at age 35

November 15, 2004

Ol’ Dirty Bastard, a k a Russell Jones, died at age 35 in the studio, not at the hands of police, a street soldier or a crazed cellmate. This isn’t the death of a Great, but the passing of a caricature of everything exhilarating and damaging in hip-hop.

Jones was constantly shifting: his name from ODB to Osiris to Big Baby Jesus; his pedigree from member of Wu-Tang to solo artist; his role from clown to inmate. As he rhymed in “Shimmy Shimmy Ya,” he was “off on a natural charge, bon voyage.”

But he never left his stage presence onstage. Arrested for stealing a $50 pair of sneakers. Thirteen children. Shot in the belly. Arrested for making terrorist threats, failure to pay child support, driving with a suspended license. A day after he died, the medical examiner said the cause of death wouldn’t be known for a week. Jones had recently finished a prison sentence for using drugs and escaping rehab.

In 1997, the legend goes, Jones dashed out of the studio to help a 4-year-old girl pinned under a car. Less than a week later, he bogarted the mike at the Grammys and bizarrely shouted: “Wu-Tang is for the children!”

He liked it raw.
