The attached photos are from a grand outdoor “feria”
on the Plaza de Armas in Cuzco – this past Christmas
Eve.  Each year, vendors from all over the city and
rural people come down to sell their hand-crafted
wares, or just bits of Mother Nature to put into the
traditional crib scenes many families have in their
homes at this time of year

By 10 a.m. the Plaza is full and busy with vendors,
the curious and the seeking…….strange and wonderful
things can be bought for a few coins.  It is not a
place for the faint of heart, for the crowds are

The day was cloudy and drizzly, but by 11 a.m. the sun
was shining brightly.  And luckily too, as some
vendors had nothing but a piece of plastic to put over
their wares.

The rainy season has begun here in the high reaches of
the Andes.  It is now summer and when the sun is out –
it can be overwhelmingly HOT!!!  But the rain is
wonderful – often accompanied by searing flashes of
lighting and deafening thunder.  It is quite dramatic
and one can imagine why the Andean people had rain and
thunder gods.  The power of these natural phenomena is
quite awe inspiring.
