U.S. Bill Sets Tight Driver’s License Rules

This is just a National ID card issued by the states without Federal funding.  I thought that the National ID card was dismissed.  It is too bad that riders on bills like this are passed.  If the Senators didn’t pass the spending bill then they would be “unpatriotic”.

The Senate approved legislation Tuesday mandating tough new federal standards for driver’s licenses, requiring at least four categories of identification for drivers to obtain or renew their licenses.

This had critics of the legislation, known as the REAL ID Act, warning of huge lines and significantly longer waits at motor vehicle offices.

More ID than for passport

“If you think a trip to the division of motor vehicles is a bad experience today, wait until the REAL ID takes effect,” said Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, the Senate’s second-ranking Democrat.

Licenses issued by any state unable or unwilling to meet the new standards would not be recognized by the federal government. They couldn’t be used as ID to board commercial airline flights, for example.

The law would require someone seeking a new or renewed license to have a document showing the person’s name and date of birth, such as a birth certificate; a document verifying the person’s legal presence in the U.S.; a photo ID; proof of a valid Social Security number and evidence of a current address, such as a utility bill.

That would mean more identification would be required for a driver’s license than for a U.S. passport, for which a photo ID like a driver’s license and proof of citizenship, typically a birth certificate, are needed.
