The rare Caddo Magnet High students outside. (high school memories)

Here is a picture of some of my classmates on the rare occasion that we were allowed outside during school.  I have no idea what we were doing outside.  This may have been preperation for a disaster drill that the city of Shreveport organized.  Other pictures I have of this event showed students dressed and acting as if they had been in some type of disaster.

I sent the picture to one of the students in it and here is her response, ”

OMG Where in the hell did you dig that up? smile Is that me?  If so, I look a hot mess.  What were we doing?  That picture looks like it was before our time.

High School photos from around 1981

This is a picture of a girl I went to high school with.  I can’t remember her name nor the class we were taking at the time.  The cabinets in the background kind of remind me of my old biology classroom at Caddo Magnet High.  If I remember, I will check my yearbook and see if I can find her name.

Taken with 35mm Pentax ME Super camera ca 1981.

Today I start sharing some of my photos as a teenager with a camera.

I’ll start posting scans from negatives that I’ve owned for decades.  Some of these photos are scanned from negatives that I’ve had for more than 23 years.  It is very likely that some of these photos were taken 25 years ago.

Years ago, when I lived in Shreveport, Louisiana, I owned a Pentax ME Super 35mm camera image with the standard 50mm lens.  My Aunt Cheryl gave me most of the money to buy the camera and I cherished it.  I can’t begin to thank her enough for all of the joy that camera gave me.  I had that camera from 1980 through 1982 or so.  We were burglarized near the end of that span and the camera was stolen.  I didn’t own another camera until I bought one prior to my first trip to Jamaica in 1994.  These photos were all taken during that three year period and reflect my photographic interests at that time.

All of the photos in this self-imposed assignment was taken with that camera.  These pictures were all taken while I was in High School and probably a part of a school assignment.  I took a photography class in school and developed most of the black and white negatives in class.  Most of these images have never been seen outside of the contact sheet I printed shortly after developing the negatives.

You may notice that most of the photos have spots and scratches and other large imperfections.  This is what happens when you move multiple times and you don’t take care of your negatives properly.  I haven’t cropped, altered, edited, sharpened, or retouched any of the scanned photos, so everything you see is how it looked on my screen after the scanner finished processing it.  I have resized the photos to make viewing them easier on the site.

I knew most of the subjects in the pictures because I went to Caddo Parish Magnet High School with them.  Many are people I met while just carrying the camera.  It is amazing how many people want to be recorded in some stranger’s photograph collection.  Some of the people asked me to send them copies of the picture they were in.  So, if you are one of the people in the pictures and want a copy, just let me know.  I’ll make a high resolution copy available for a VERY affordable price.

This is my friend Pape.

This is one of the men that made my stay in Rufisque, Senegal tolerable.  It is very difficult to maintain a healthy composure when you have noone to easily communicate with.  I can see how solitary confinement is so devastationg.  Although I had family around me all day everyday, it was difficult to communicate with them.  I’m a dumb American.  I only speak one language fluently.  The language I speak fluently is not one of the four or five languages that my family in Senegal speaks.  Each day I wondered when my mind will “click” and suddenly understand what everyone was saying around me.

It didn’t happen.  Thank GOD that this Pape was around the house most days.  If he hadn’t visited, I’d have gone crazy very easy.

In this picture, you may recognize the hanging phone cord from a series of pictures taken on that wall.  Here is another picture of that wall I posted earlier.  Aminta, in red phone series.
